Educational Framework
Accessible Rigor Framework
Designing learning experiences that maintain high expectations while intentionally reducing unnecessary barriers.
Developed by Nicole Hamilton
The Challenge
Rigor is often associated with increased difficulty, complexity, or the amount of content students must navigate. However, challenging learning does not require unnecessary barriers.
The Accessible Rigor Framework focuses on designing learning experiences where students engage with meaningful, intellectually demanding ideas while receiving the support, structure, and pathways needed to successfully access those ideas.
The Core Idea
The goal is not to make learning easier. The goal is to make learning more accessible without reducing the depth, complexity, or importance of the ideas students are expected to understand.
Maintain High Expectations
Students engage with meaningful, intellectually demanding ideas.
Clarify Important Ideas
Explanations are precise, clear, and free of unnecessary complexity.
Provide Intentional Pathways for Understanding
Structure and scaffolding help students access challenging content.
Connect Concepts to Meaningful Contexts
Learning is grounded in authentic, relevant applications.
Support Students in Applying What They Learn
Students practice using ideas, not just recognizing them.
Accessible Rigor in Practice
The Accessible Rigor Framework has guided the design of Real World Statistics: A Student's Guide to Understanding and Using Data and other instructional resources developed through Simpler Math.
Meaningful Contexts
Real-world data and scenarios that give ideas genuine purpose.
Intentional Scaffolding
Supports that build understanding without removing the challenge.
Clear Explanations and Representations
Multiple entry points so more students can access the same ideas.
Application-Focused Learning
Students use what they learn — not just recall it.
